Welcome address of Uwe Bicker

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 4th International Thoracic Oncology Congress Dresdentitled “Advances through Molecular Biology in Thoracic Cancer” held in the Saxon capital on September 12-14, 2014.

We consider it a great honor to have initiated this international, interdisciplinary conference on lungcancer for the third time, not only because of the high expertise of the members of the congressfaculty but also because of the issues discussed. It is vitally important that lung cancer, a majorhealth problem of our societies, not only is a matter of laboratory research but instead is in thefocus of clinical projects with very innovative techniques in various disciplines such as molecular-pathology, radiology, pulmonology, radiotherapy, surgery, medical oncology and last but not leastepidemiology and general health care.

In addition I am especially proud that this year’s ITOCD has integrated a specific session for younginvestigators of the Polish Medical University Bialystok, we fruitfully cooperate with for almost onedecade in clinical and scientific projects.

Needless to say that cigarette smoking must be extinguished if we really want gain significantprogress in the control of lung cancer.

Needless to say that cigarette smoking must be extinguished if we really want gain significantprogress in the control of lung cancer.

However, for the time being we need to help patients around the globe affected by this devastatingdisease by optimal standards in diagnosis and treatment. To assure the availability of at leastminimal standards we need international, interdisciplinary discussions on the highest clinical andscientific level available today, that means conferences such as the 4th ITOCD taking place in Dresden. Therefore, I wish all the attendees, the audience, chairs and speakers success bypresenting their experience and by stimulating discussions which finally may lead to animprovement in the daily care of our lung cancer patients.

Good luck for the conference, and please also enjoy the beautiful baroque city of Dresden.
