Welcome address of Helma Orosz
Dear Congress Participants,
“Knowledge means understanding all things to our best advantage” – inspired by this maxim fromFriedrich Nietzsche, I am delighted to welcome you, the participants at the 4th InternationalThoracic Oncology Congress, and wish you a pleasant stay in the city of Dresden.
The agenda for your congress is as diverse and all-embracing as the field it serves: The prevention, treatment and study of lung cancer.
So many people are well aware of the consequences of tobacco consumption, but only few of theso-called hardliners actually give up smoking or – better still – shun taking up the habit in the firstplace. As former British Prime Minister and dedicated cigar-lover Winston Churchill once said:“Personally, I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.” How true! Butthere are also other sources and causes of lung cancer. It is not least for this reason that you havecome together in Dresden for what is already the fourth time, and that you will be using the comingdays to exchange experiences and views with colleagues from around the world, to trigger newdiscussions and to further intensify the networking of international clinical and pharmaceuticalresearch. Dresden is an ideal venue in this respect: Our city can look back over a long medicalhistory. The first “Collegium Medico-Chirurgicum” was founded here in the 18th century. In 1912,the German Hygiene Museum was opened in the city, and has been working to promote healthylifestyles ever since. Dresden is today not only a city of art and culture, but also a centre of medicalscience and research. Prominent mention is of course due to the Faculty of Medicine “Carl GustavCarus” at the TU Dresden, one of eleven “Universities of Excellence” in Germany. But thereputations of the many specialists in our municipal and other hospitals also speak for themselves. It is thus a great honour for all concerned to be able to welcome the absolute elite in the field of lungcancer research and practice to our city.
I wish you a successful congress with interesting discussions and lectures, valuable insights foryour future work, and hopefully fond memories of your time in Dresden.
