Welcome address KNOW Session
4th International Thoracic Oncology Congress in Dresden titled Advances through Molecular Biology, owing to active contribution of world-leading experts, will provide an unique opportunity for sharing the most up-dated knowledge on diagnosis and innovative therapies of lung cancer. As members of scientific community of Medical University of Bialystok, the first biomedical center in this part of Europe that launched new 4-year Interdisciplinary PhD Studies in English focused on joint education in biomedical and biostatistical sciences, we are very honoured to actively participate in this world renowned lung cancer congress. We highly appreciate the fact that both members of faculty of our Interdisciplinary PhD Studies as well as PhD students, biomedical and biostatistical experts, will have an excellent opportunity for sharing their concepts and thoughts on recent findings and perspectives in the field of thoracic oncology.
Resolving problems of efficient diagnosis and individualized treatment of lung cancer requires systematic and collaborative approach. Contemporary diagnostic techniques used in large-scale clinical trials that are based on comprehensive analysis of genome, epigenome, proteome and metabolome can generate terabytes of digital information. In order to obtain clinical and scientific benefit, this information needs to be appropriately and critically analyzed by a team comprised of physicians, scientists and biostatisticians. Therefore, bridging the educational gap among biomedical and statistical specialists requires novel academic initiatives. Our Interdisciplinary PhD Studies in English provide an outstanding opportunity for in-depth education in high-throughput experimental and computational techniques used in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and immunology. Within the scope of established Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies in English PhD students are placed within the following two groups: A) biomedical group consisting of students that obtained their MSc (or equivalent) in biomedical sciences, B) methodological group consisting of students that graduated from mathematics and informatics. Importantly, students from both groups share same labs, seminars, lectures, and, in addition, are frequently in need of joint meetings aimed at elaborating a multidisciplinary approach to solving scientific projects.
PhD students are involved in large-scale scientific projects carried out with excellent researchers from Center for Innovative Research (Medical University of Bialystok, Center for Statistic (CenStat), Hasselt University, Belgium; Center for Metabolomics and Bioanalysis (CEMBIO), University San Pablo-CEU, Madrid, Spain; Mossakowski Medical Research Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences).
